[On the outskirts of the crusader’s camp in the Valley of Josaphat. Soldiers stand guard around one tent.] | |
ROGER
Voici de Josaphat, la lugubre vallée... Jérusalem! Où vont flatter nos étendards. Que je trouve, ô mon Dieu, la mort sur ses ramparts, et reçois dans ton sein mon âme désolée. |
ROGER (alone)
Here is Josaphat, the doleful valley... Jerusalem! Where our banners will soon wave. Might I find, oh my God, death on her ramparts and may my desolate soul be received into your keeping. |

[Crusaders appear followed by pilgrims and women, among whom is Helene.] | |

C’est là qu’apparut, portant le calice, un ange au fils de Dieu... c’est ici qu’il pleura. Et son supplice, ces lieux l’ont vu, c’est là. |
PILGRIMS
It is here that the angel bearing the chalice appeared to the Son of God... it is here where he wept. And this very place witnessed his supplication. |
