[They embrace and listen anxiously.]

[They rush to the window but their escape is prevented as the Emir’s officer and palace guards rush in and subdue them.]

[A garden outside the Emir’s harem. As the Emir enters with his officers, the women, except for Helene, leave.]

Par le secours d’Allah nous les vaincrons. 
Et si mon bras ne les arrète; si le chef des 
croisés pénètre dans Ramla, que de sa fille 
on lui jette la tête!		 With the help of Allah we will be the 
victors. And if my weapons do not stop 
them and they enter Ramla, the head of

such suffering when I have forever 
lost the one I love? And in addition 
to my despair I must face the scorn
