PILGRIMS PILGRIMS
notre offense! Dans nos cœurs fais surgir
l’espérance. Deigne enfin signaler ta
puissance. Vers la France ouvre-nous un
chemin. Sol natale... Ô patrie! Ô fontaines...
cristal si pur de nos sources lointaines!
Ciel si doux.., frais abris des vieux chênes.
Mourrons-nous sans cercueil? Et si loin de
vous nous mourrons maudissant la misère et
la terre ou pour toi nous souffrons. Ah, mais
enfin fais surgir l’espérance. Vers la France
ouvre-nous un chemin!
Oh my God! Oh God, look upon our misery!
Lost in this desert and dying of thirst, will
we ever be saved by the soldiers of the
crusade, our brothers? Alas... alas....!
Oh my God, your word then is in vain — that
our suffering should end in this place. In
these ravines all the springs run dry... those
we find disappear at the touch of our hands.
Our misfortune has paid for our sins! Let
hope be restored to our hearts. Give us at
last a sign of your might. Show us the way
toward France. Our native soil... oh home-
land! Fountains of crystal-pure water from
those distant springs! Gentle skies... cool
shade of ancient oaks. Are we to die without
a coffin? Die so far away, cursing our fate
and the land on which we suffer for you? Ah,
give us hope once again. Show us the way
toward France!
[Trumpets are heard in the distance.]
Écoutez! Ce sont eux cette marche guerrière! Listen! It is they, the marching warriors!
[Several pilgrims climb a hill and cry with joy:]
Les croisés! Le ciel entendit ma prière! The crusaders! Heaven has heard our prayer!
[The knights of the crusade enter on horseback and begin administering to the pilgrims. They are followed by the Count of Toulouse. the Papal Legate and retinue.]
COUNT COUNT
Dieu soit loué! Du fer d’un assasin, lui
qui sut préserver mon sein!
God be praised! He who saved me
from an assasin’s blade!
THE LEGATE THE LEGATE
Nous voici enfin parvenues en Palestine!
Quand le jour renaîtra dans sa splendeur
divine. Jérusalem à nos yeux paraîtra.
We have reached Palestine at last!
When dawn breaks, Jerusalem will be
revealed to our eyes in all its divine
splendor.
KNIGHTS KNIGHTS
C’est lui.., c’est le saint homme que
pour sa piété dans ces lieux on renomme.
It’s he... it's the holy man who is so
renowned for his piety in this region.
COUNT COUNT [to Roger]
Homme de Dieu! Bénissez-nous! Man of God! Give us your blessing!
ROGER  ROGER [overcome]
Ô ciel!... Oh heaven!...
[He falls to his knees.]
COUNT COUNT
Que faites-vous? What are you doing?
ROGER ROGER
Chef des soldats du Christ qui portez sa
bannière, laissez-moi m’ incliner le
front dans la poussière...
Chief of the soldiers of Christ who
carries his banner, let me bow my
head before you here in the dust...
COUNT COUNT
Levez-vous... Rise...
ROGER ROGER
(Oh tais-toi, tais-toi, cri de mon cœur,
le repentir trahirait le coupable! ...)

Accueillez dans vos rangs, chrétiens,
un misérable.

(Oh keep silent this cry that swells in
my heart, lest repentance betray my guilt ! ...)
[To the crusaders]
Accept into your ranks, Christians,
a worthless sinner.
COUNT COUNT
Un saint homme! A holy man!
ROGER ROGER
Un pécheur... qui s’offre pour combattre
un soldat en victime. Le sang pour Dieu
versé rachète même un crime.
A sinner... who offers his life to fight
as a soldier. Blood spilled for God
redeems even a crime.
ROGER EVERYONE
Le Seigneur nous promet la victoire, oh
bonheur! Nous verrons dans sa gloire le
saint lieu précieux territoire où d’un Dieu
garde encore l’adieu. Oui, levons la
bannière chrétienne et chassons cette
horde payenne! Dieu puissant, notre
cause est la tienne. Dans le sang
renversons le croissant! Ô Dieu puissant!
The Lord promises us victory, what
joy! We shall see the holy spot in all
its glory where once God bade farewell
to this earth. Yes, let us raise the
banner of Christianity and disperse the
pagan horde. Almight God, our cause
is yours. We will trample their crescent
flag in blood! Oh God almighty!
[They set out for battle.]
