ROGER | ROGER |
Un malheureux que la fatigue accable! | A poor wretch overcome by fatigue! |
[He takes his water gourd from the staff.]
RAYMOND | RAYMOND |
Donnez... la soif me
tue...
Ô saint homme, merci!
|
Give it to me... I’m
dying of thirst...
[He drinks.] Oh saintly man, thank you!
|
ROGER | ROGER [Pointing to the cave.] |
Reposez-vous ici. | You may rest there. |
RAYMOND | RAYMOND |
| There are others lost there in the mountains. |
ROGER | ROGER |
Je vole à leur secours. | I will go to their aid. |
RAYMOND | RAYMOND |
Le ciel vous accompagne! | May heaven be with you! |
ROGER | ROGER |
| Grant, oh my God, that I might save them! |
[Roger departs as Raymond enters the cave. Helene and Isaure approach the cave from a mountain pass.]
ISAURE | ISAURE |
Loin des croisés, madame,
et loin de
votre père, nous hasarder. |
So far from the crusaders, madam,
and
from your father, we're risking our life. |
HELENE | HELENE |
This holy hermit whom the Christians
and Saracens both revere, I wish to question. Banished from France, Gaston has come to Palestine to hide his shame. They say that he’s dead. If so, his troubles have ended... but not mine. This hermite may know. Let’s go in, Isaure, quickly... |
[Isaure peers into the cave and backs away, startled.]
ISAURE | ISAURE |
Mais... voyez sur le seuil! | But... look, just inside! |
[Helene looks in and recognizes Raymond.]
HELENE | HELENE |
En croirai-je mes yeux?
...L’écuyer de Gaston! |
Can I believe my eyes?
...Gaston’s squire! |
HELENE | RAYMOND |
Vous, madame? En ces lieux! | You, madam? Here in this place! |
HELENE | HELENE |
Parle-moi de ton maître! Parle!
Tell me of your master! Speak!
Let me know what he has suffered. |
RAYMOND | RAYMOND |
Together we left France. Trying
to
console him in his torment, I followed him into the desert. Always his thoughts returned to his fiancée whom he called upon with tears in his eyes... |
[Helene falters but is supported by Isaure.]
HELENE | HELENE |
Achève.., je suis calme. | Please continue... I’m all right. |
RAYMOND | RAYMOND |
Un jour en combattant le nombre,
hélas,
rendit sa valeur inutile. Depuis, dans cette ville... Captif... |
One day in battle, alas, the number
of the enemy rendered his valor useless. Since then, in a city over there... (He points toward Ramla.) He has been held prisoner... |
HELENE | HELENE |
l n’est pas mort? | He is not dead? |
RAYMOND | RAYMOND |
Il est là prisonnier. | He’s a prisoner there. |
[The three go off in the direction
of Ramla.
Presently, small groups of Christian pilgrims, exhausted by fatigue and thirst, come upon the scene and regard the solitude about them in despair.] |
