THE LEGATE | THE LEGATE |
Christians, lower your
blades!
The lightning of the church will strike the guilty. This act of bloodshed calls out for anathema. Yes, alone you will go in this world as the count’s murderer! Branded by heaven and bowed in disgrace, you shall be denied, infamous man, even bread and salt. |
CHORUS | CHORUS |
Meurtrier! Sois maudit! Soit maudit! Ta misère dans l’exil va chercher quelque terre où l’echo porte à Dieu ta prière. Ton forfait dans le sang est écrit. Sois maudit! |
Anathema is pronounced upon you.
Even God is horrified by such sacrilege! Imposter, your mouth blasphemes! Murderer! Be damned! Be damned! In your misery go seek some part of the earth where the echo of your prayers might reach God. Your crime is written in blood. Be damned! |
ROGER | ROGER |
(Sur mon front doit tomber l’anathème!
Fratricide en horreur à Dieu même. C’ est du ciel la justice suprême... Vil Caïn, soit maudit! Soit maudit! |
(On my head anathema must fall!
Fratricide horrifies God himself. It is the supreme justice of heaven... Vile Cain, be accursed! Be damned! Yes, in his just anger, the Lord hurls his thunderbolts at me! Forever in horror upon this earth, my crime is written in blood...) |
GASTON | GASTON |
Par le ciel, suspendez l’anathème!
Car mon cœur en appelle à Dieu même. Arrêtez !... Votre bouche blasphème! Moi coupable? |
In the name of heaven, stay the
anathema!
For my heart calls out to God himself. Stop!... Your mouths blaspheme! I, guilty? Oh my God, I, accursed? Innocent yet dishonored, I must endure my misery throughout the earth in exile! No! Heaven will hear my prayer and will avenge the outcast! |

ACT TWO | |
[The mountains of Ramla, not far from Jerusalem. The mouth of a cave can be seen, in front of which stands a crude, wooden cross. Roger, dressed in a coarse robe, tied with a rope, lies prostrate at the foot of the cross.]
ROGER | ROGER |
|
Forgive me, my God! Torn
by remorse
I have made this holy pilgrimage in my bare feet, and for three years I have cried alone in this savage desert. With this pallor and greying hair I cannot even recognize my reflection in the spring water! Perhaps the stain of blood may yet be cleansed... Lord! How my tortured spirit yearns for your pardon! May this soul sullied by fratricide be delivered from your wrath and humbly invoke your holy name... Oh fatal day! Oh crime! Ever I see before me the tomb of my victim at the bottom of an abyss. The ghost of my brother, bleeding in the dust, stills my prayers and causes my voice to tremble. Yet heaven, never- theless, sees my suffering, and God in his mercy still offers me hope. |
[He goes into the cave. Presently Raymond, Gaston’s squire, is seen dragging himself toward the cross, weak with fatigue.]
RAYMOND | RAYMOND |
Du secours, ô mon Dieu! Faut-il
mourir ainsi? |
Help me. oh my God! Must I die here
like this? |
[Roger comes out of the cave with his pilgrim’s staff.] |
