[Knights enter carrying the captured standards. The last to appear is Gaston, sword in hand and with visor lowered.]
COUNT
COUNT (addressing Gaston)
Noble warrior, who was the first to plant our banner of the faith in the conquered city, what is your name? |
GASTON
Me reconnaissez-vous? |
GASTON (lifting his visor)
Do you not recognize me? |
KNIGHTS
Oh surprise... Gaston! |
KNIGHTS
What... Gaston! |
GASTON
Oui! |
GASTON
Yes! It is I upon whose name is covered in infamy! My banner was thrown to your feet in shreds! Yet, though my sword was villified by you. I have fought for you in battle, now carry out my execution! |
HELENE
Le ferez-vous mourir? |
HELENE
Could you now kill him? |
GASTON
Qu’on me mène au martyre. |
GASTON
Lead me to martyrdom. |
[Roger, mortally wounded, is carried in by some knights.]

Arrête! |
ROGER
Stop! |
ALL
Le saint homme!... Il est blessé! |

The holy man!... He’s wounded! |
ROGER
J ‘ expire... Vous allez me maudire... Reconnais-moi... Je suis... ton frère. |
ROGER
I’m dying... Heaven though grants me a moment of life more... You will curse me... (to the count) Recognize me... I am... your brother. |
ALL
Lui!... Roger! |
ALL
He!... Roger! |
ROGER
ROGER
A moment... Only a moment is left... My dying breath implores you to spare Gaston! It was my remorse that brought me here. I alone must pay for a crime that I committed. |
[There’s a general commotion. Helene runs to Gaston.]
HELENE, ISAURE and
RAYMOND
Dieu secourable! |
HELENE, ISAURE and
RAYMOND
Merciful God! To him you restore happiness, life and honor. |
GASTON
GASTON
God of mercy, you have restored to me my happiness, life and honor! |
COUNT and
LEGATE
Quoi? Le coupable c’est mon [son] frère! Oh terreur!... Oh mystère d’horreur! |
COUNT and LEGATE
What? The guilty one is my [his] brother! Terror ! ... Oh mystery of horror! |
ROGER
À mon heure dernière, grâce. Grâce! |
ROGER
In my last hour have pity. Mercy! |
[The count goes to Roger and embraces him.]
COUNT
Mon frère! |
COUNT
Brother! |
ROGER
ROGER
...Allow me to gaze upon the Lord’s city as I die. |
[The back of the tent is opened to reveal a panorama of the city of Jerusalem. As Roger expires, all join in a hymn of thanksgiving.]
ALL
ALL
Glory to you, oh God of victory! In memory of your unfailing support, let the angels, the holy hosts of heaven, resound their hymns of praise about him! |
